The Pub Cricket team was founded by the current proprietor
of the Miners Standard, Kevin Markham in the 2001 season,
providing practice net and equipment at the Miners. Thanks Kev!
Practice nets - Tuesdays - at the Miners from 7.00pm.
Since the beginning the team has developed the spirit of
inclusion and involves people from all walks of life and, more importantly, all levels of
cricket experience. We welcome and encourage new enthusiastic
members. Youth members are welcome too giving opportunities for
dads and sons to play together on the same team.
Our ethos is very much that of fun, friendship and enjoyment.
No-one remarks more than our
visitors, spectators and competitors, who, year after year,
comment on the warm atmosphere and friendliness of everyone involved.
None of this would be possible, of course, without the
devotion and commitment of Les Wood, who tirelessly prepares the pitch
and ground for our home matches at Matlock Cricket Club. (Unfortunately Winster
does not have its own cricket pitch). A special vote of thanks
to Les!
Thanks also to Les's young assistant groundsmen and to the
ladies and gentlemen who provide the refreshments and staff the
bar afterwards! Thanks also to the many supporters who come and
have a good time themselves.
Since its formation, the team has had links with the village of
Hawes and
have played in the North Yorkshire valley (where the Wensleydale
creamery is to be found).
